Free Download Manager

Free Download Manager (FDM)

offers you a vast variety of options to control and schedule your downloads. This is a light-weight but powerful download manager.

FDM can resume your broken download so that you needn't start it from the beginning after casual interruption.

FDM allows you to limit the downloading speed. There are 3 modes of network usage: Light, Medium and Heavy.

Capability to split download into several sections allows you to increase download speed up to 600%.

FDM can connect to the Internet at a set time, download the files you want, launch any program, disconnect or shut down your computer when it's done.

This download manager allows you to specify the settings of network usage, such as login and password, maximum number of connections, default group, etc. So you can avoid adjusting these settings every time you need to create new download from the server.

Also you can download the whole web sites from the remote server. You can adjust FDM to download files with the extensions you have specified.

Adobe Soundbooth Beta

Edit sound files, create loops, record running sound, add multiple effects and do much more with this simple to use sound editor

Adobe has come up with a feature-rich and user-friendly sound editor, Soundbooth (Beta 2). It is so simple that even an amateur can use it. However, it is still in the Beta stage and you can expect to do much more with it in the full version. The Adobe Soundbooth interface has lots of Windows embedded, which can be fully customized.

Just like in Photoshop, Adobe has introduced the 'History' window that lets you go back and forward to any desired editing step. The sound timeline can be zoomed in and out with the mouse scroller, which makes it simple. All the basic buttons of a sound editor like play/pause and record buttons are included on the lower panel of the interface. If your interface workspace gets too cluttered or confusing, you can simply click on the reset workspace button that takes you back to the default workspace settings.

Multiple sound files can be opened in the same interface and you can copy and paste a
portion from one to another

Soundbooth supports most of the sound and music file formats like WMV, WMA and WAV, but sadly you cannot edit or save in MP3 format. Among others, one good feature is noise reduction. It gets rid of the noise in the backdrop of a recorded music piece. Other common tools are fade in/ fade out, louder tool and the record tool. The latter lets you record running sound/music from your Windows media player or via a mic. Other than the basic copy/paste feature of sound, Adobe has added a 'Mix paste' feature through which you can increase or decrease the volume of the sound part which is being pasted or the track on which sound is being pasted on. This is a good option because if you are working on 2 different tracks, they might be having different volume levels, so via Mix paste you can adjust volume accordingly.

Lots of effects can be found such as the vocal enhancer with which one can enhance the male, female sound or music volume. These effects are available as basic effects and also on the advanced level (with extra features) on the 'Effects' menu. Markers can be added for easy references with which you can keep track of those important key points where editing needs to be done.

As compared to other sound editors such as Song Sound Forge, this one's catching up with new features like Mix edit and History. But more work is needed in terms of getting support for sound formats.

The Best Free Utilities

The Best Free Utilities :

I'm old enough to remember the bad old days of Windows. I struggled with crashing programs and merciless 640K DOS memory limits that made running game software almost impossible. To keep your PC working in those days, you needed a host of utilities: memory managers, disk defragmenters, and system boot tuners that became crucial to your day-to-day work.

Times change, and yet they remain the same. Windows XP has helped sweep away the old frustrations, but it leaves new ones in its wake. Fortunately, there is a quiet army of programmers, developers, and software makers churning out utilities to fix what ails you and your current PC. Here, in alphabetical order, is a look at some of my favorite utilities--the ones I rely on every day.

AllSnap:

I almost feel bad recommending AllSnap because it's so much simpler than the average utility. Install AllSnap and the program quietly makes program windows and dialog boxes click into place. No more slipping and sliding: windows snap cleanly to the edge of the screen or to each other.

Firefox Extensions:

Over the years, Internet Explorer has inspired a raft of utilities, from pop-up blockers to cookie-management tools. The popular Firefox browser is getting similar treatment, but these utilities are packaged as Firefox Extensions--applets that plug into the browser. My two favorites are the Tab Mix extension for managing tabbed page behaviors, and the All-in-One Gestures extension for navigating with simple swipes of the mouse.

With Tab Mix, I can control where tabs appear and how they behave--adding a Close Tab icon to each tab, for instance, which makes it much easier to close individual tabs. All-in-One Gestures eliminates the need to click the browser's Forward and Back buttons. Instead, you just click the right mouse button while dragging the mouse left or right to move backward or forward. Very cool.

Folder Size:

Windows Explorer's Detail view lets you see all sorts of information about files, including creation and modification date, and of course, file size. But folders in Explorer don't get the same treatment. The only way to see how much information is stored in a folder is to hover the cursor over it and wait for a balloon to pop up.

Folder Size is a tiny app that adds two columns to the Detail view--one displaying the size of the folder and another that lets you sort by size. It's not a perfect solution, but the added information really helps in some instances, such as when trying to figure out if the contents of my music directory will fit on one DVD-R disc.

JGoodies JDiskReport:

The age of digital media means no disk is big enough. The Java-based JDiskReport utility scans your hard disk and then produces highly informative graphical displays. You can see exactly where most of your data is residing, and even explore data by file type, last modified date, and other criteria. It's a terrific tool for deciding what files you want to keep on your overcrowded hard disk, and what files might be good for saving to removable media.

IrfanView:

IrfanView is the little app that could. Small, fast, and easy to use, it displays or plays back almost every type of media, including images, photos, music, and video files. Unlike hopeless media bloatware like Windows Media Player and RealNetworks RealPlayer, IrfanView also doubles as a lightweight photo editor. Perform red-eye removal, color and gamma tweaks, image resizing, and format conversions. There's even a useful set of batch operations--great for renaming files or applying an image change across a set of files.

Microsoft AntiSpyware:

In a classic case of "better late than never," Microsoft last winter released a beta version of its free antispyware tool. Based on the respected Giant AntiSpyware product, Microsoft AntiSpyware offers a capable spyware scan and removal engine that has proven superior to popular freeware offerings like Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Microsoft AntiSpyware goes even further, letting you purge Internet caches, recently used file lists, and cookie files to better ensure your privacy.

NetStumbler:

Wireless networking is great--until Windows XP gets confused and can't find your network. When Wi-Fi befuddlement strikes, I launch NetStumbler, a utility that uses your Wi-Fi adapter to listen for nearby networks and then display detailed information about each access point. Useful for sniffing out Wi-Fi hotspots and troubleshooting problems, NetStumbler displays information such as Wi-Fi protocol, encryption type, access point ID, and signal and noise levels. If you have a global positioning system, NetStumbler can even map out access-point locations. Very handy.

StatBar:

Sometimes smaller is better--much better. The svelte StatBar monitoring utility provides a sleek and slim interface for checking on all sorts of stuff, from CPU workloads and memory usage, to network traffic, battery levels, and even WinAmp controls. Loads of customizations make this attractive program one of my must-install utilities.

Rainmeter:

Another riff on the PC-monitoring theme, Rainmeter is eye-pleasing and boasts a sleek clock and a compact RSS feed display. The graphics are stunning, but they take up enough screen real estate that some users might opt for the more compact StatBar.

Real Alternative:

RealNetworks' RealPlayer pushes the line between software and spyware, installing all sorts of unwanted stuff onto your PC. Unfortunately, other media players can't play back RealVideo and RealAudio files, forcing millions to bite the bullet and load the RealPlayer application.

Real Alternative ends the tough choice by letting users play back Real-format files inside a specially modified version of the "classic" Windows Media Player. Users can play both downloaded and streaming tracks, without worrying about the software reporting back on their viewing or listening preferences to Real's servers. There's also an alternative to the QuickTime viewer, called QuickTime Alternative.

Eraser 5.7 Version

Eraser 5.7 Version

Eraser is an advanced security tool, which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.

You can drag and drop files and folders to the on-demand eraser, use the convenient Explorer shell extension or use the integrated scheduler to program overwriting of unused disk space or, for example, browser cache files to happen regularly, at night, during your lunch break, at weekends or whenever you like.

The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann´s paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory" and they are selected to effectively remove the magnetic remnants from the hard disk.

Other methods include the one defined in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the US Department of Defense and overwriting with pseudorandom data. You can also define your own overwriting methods.

Vista now in use on less than 1% of PCs

Windows Vista may yet prove to be an unstoppable juggernaut, but statistics released today by a market research firm show that the new operating system hasn't even licked its nine-year old ancestor.

Vista was being used on less than 1% of PCs tracked in February by Aliso Viejo-based Net Applications Inc., making it the sixth most-popular operating system. That puts it behind Windows 98, which is still used on 1.5% of computers.

Vista's exact share was 0.93%. Windows XP continued to lead, with 84.3%, followed by Windows 2000, with 4.8%. Mac OS X on PowerPC machines had 4.3%, while newer Intel-based PCs running OS X had 2.1%.

Net Applications collects its data from the browsers of visitors to its network of more than 40,000 Web sites.

Vista's February share of PCs connected to the Internet -- a month after its consumer release and three months after its release to businesses -- represents a big leap over January, when it was used by just 0.2% of PCs. At the time, it lagged behind Windows ME, the 13-year-old Windows NT and various flavors of Linux.

"The big question is if and when are the masses going to switch?" Net Applications analyst Vince Vizzacarro said in a newsletter accompanying the statistics. "While Microsoft was late to market with Vista, Apple's taken advantage and is now up to a combined 6.38% market share. It looks like the market is buying Vista on new PC purchases, but there isn't a significant percentage of people upgrading existing PCs. I expect this trend to continue through the rest of 2007."

Some analysts have predicted that despite Microsoft's intention to spend half a billion dollars marketing Vista, conversions from XP won't be the norm until 2009.

Statistics for the first week of February -- Vista officially launched Jan. 30 -- were mixed. Current Analysis found sales of PCs -- with Vista preinstalled -- were up 173% from the week before. PC sales were also up 67% from the same time frame in 2006. But Current Analysis itself pointed out that the sales leaps were exaggerated partly by slowing sales as retailers and OEMs wound down their XP-based inventory.

By comparison, NPD Group Inc. found that first-week sales of boxed copies of Vista were down 60% compared with first-week boxed copies of Windows XP five years earlier.

Neither group has released statistics of Vista sales in subsequent weeks, though NPD analyst Chris Swenson is expected to release first-month retail sales of the new OS soon.

What's wrong with Microsoft Windows Vista?

by John Sullivan
Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system is a giant step backward for your freedoms.
Usually software is supposed to enable you to do more with your computer. Vista, though, is designed to restrict what you can do.Vista enforces new forms of “Digital Rights Management (DRM)”. DRM is more accurately called Digital Restrictions Management, because it is a technology that Big Media and computer companies try to impose on us all, in order to have control over how our computers are used.

Vista Screenshot:

DRM enables Microsoft and media companies to:
  • Decide which programs you can and can't use on your computer
  • Decide which features of your computer or software you can use at any given moment
  • Force you to install new programs even when you don't want to (and, of course, pay for the privilege)
  • Restrict your access to certain programs and even to your own data files
DRM is enforced by technological barriers. You try to do something, and your computer tells you that you can't. To make this effective, your computer has to be constantly monitoring what you are doing. This constant monitoring uses computing power and memory, and is a large part of the reason why Microsoft is telling you that you have to buy new and more powerful hardware in order to run Vista. They want you to buy new hardware not because you need it, but because your computer needs it in order to be more effective at restricting what you do.
Microsoft and other computer companies sometimes refer to these restrictions as “Trusted Computing.” Given that they are designed to make it so that your computer stops trusting you and starts trusting Microsoft, these restrictions are more appropriately called “Treacherous Computing”.
Even when you legally buy Vista, you don't own it.Windows Vista, like previous versions of Windows, is proprietary software: leased to you under a license that severely restricts how you can use it, and without source code, so nobody but Microsoft can change it or even verify what it really does.

Microsoft says it best:

The software is licensed, not sold. This agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights. Unless applicable law gives you more rights despite this limitation, you may use the software only as expressly permitted in this agreement. In doing so, you must comply with any technical limitations in the software that only allow you to use it in certain ways.

To make it even more confusing, different versions of Vista have different licensing restrictions. You can read all of the licenses at http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/useterms/default.aspx.

It's painful to read the licenses, and this is often why people don't object to them. But if we don't start objecting, we will lose valuable freedoms. Here are some of the ridiculous restrictions you will find in your reading:

If your copy of Vista came with the purchase of a new computer, that copy of Vista may only be legally used on that machine, forever.
If you bought Vista in a retail store and installed it on a machine you already owned, you have to completely delete it on that machine before you can install it on another machine.
You give Microsoft the right, through programs like Windows Defender, to delete programs from your system that it decides are spyware.
You consent to being spied upon by Microsoft, through the “Windows Genuine Advantage” system. This system tries to identify instances of copying that Microsoft thinks are illegitimate. Unfortunately, a recent study indicated that this system has already screwed up in over 500,000 cases.
Free software like GNU/Linux does not require you to consent to these absurd licensing terms. It is called free software because you are free to make as many copies as you want, and to share it with as many friends as you want. Nobody will be monitoring your actions or falsely calling you a thief.

DreamScene gets mixed reception

Windows DreamScene is Microsoft's animated wallpaper program that's currently in "preview" (beta) for users of Windows Vista Ultimate. So far, reactions have been mixed.
While users seem to love the concept, the amount of CPU used to do it seems to vary wildly. From 12% or so on my ThinkPad T60 to nearly 50% on systems that are much faster.
The difference? So far, it basically can be thrown to the feet of nVidia. Their drivers, which not only seem to crash PC games do double-duty in being very inefficient with DreamScene.
Below are the results on my laptop. Note the very low (as in not great) performance rating and yet its relatively low CPU use while running a DreamScene. It has an ATI card.

Lest someone thinks I have it out for nVidia, my primray machine has two nVidia 7950s in it. I just wish nVidia would take its drivers more seriously. They were crummy on Windows XP. Some may recall how you'd see reports about how WindowBlinds or WindowFX "slowed my machine to a crawl" and called our software bloated not realizing that no, our stuff runs great if the drivers are decent (like the ATI ones or the occasional nVidia one).
Now, Microsoft is getting a taste of what we've gone through. Maybe this time, nVidia will be motivated to worry about desktop drivers rather than trying to show they can get an extra frame per sec in a first person shooter.
Still, if you have a good machine, nVidia or ATI, the CPU use isn't a big deal in actual use, especially if the .DREAM file's content is in MPEG and not WMV (WMV is more CPU intensive). And hopefully soon nVidia's drivers will get better. Because I want to get an Geforce 8800 but am not going to get one until they fix this stuff.
